December 7, 2011 - Departure

We have been preparing for this trip for months.

So many months ago we heard that Ankita Jain would be marrying J.D. Rosensweig. Both are good friends of my nephew Andrew Smith (who now has a marriage scheduled with Isabel Escobar). We have had several weekends in the Bay area and at our home visiting with them, playing games and eating vegetarian food.

Ankita is from India, and when they announced they would have marriages in both Cincinnati and India, Lindy and I immediately invited ourselves (with their enthusiastic approval) to the Indian wedding.

We have made all the arrangements of plane reservations, getting new passports, applying for an India visa, and packing all (and more) that we will need for the trip.

Today, finally, we depart.

Richard Manjarrez was generous enough to sleep over at our house last night so he could drive us early (about 4:45 AM) to the airport. We threw our two 22" suitcases and my green backpack into the Jeep and took off. United airlines flew us to San Francisco where we boarded another United flight for the long haul to Hong Kong.

I set my watch to Hong Kong time, fourteen hours ahead of California's. Our plan was to stay awake for as much of the trip as possible, and finally collapse into a comfortable hotel bed on arrival in Hong Kong. By midnight, we were somewhere over the Pacific, still awake and amused by airplane movies and books downloaded onto my new Kindle Fire.
